How to measure windows for curtains

Getting the size of your curtains just right makes all the difference in a beautifully designed space.

If it’s time to upgrade your curtains, there are a number of factors to consider. You will need to choose a style that suits your particular interior and ensure that you get the correct size for your window frames. Read on for our top tips on measuring your windows for curtains…

Choose a mounting technique

When it comes to choosing curtains for your space, the first step to consider is the mounting technique that you would like to use — do you want to mount your curtains inside or outside the window frame? The decision you make will depend on the particular aesthetic style you prefer. The most common technique is an outside mount, in which case the curtain rod is attached to the wall outside of the window frame. This technique is often a good choice for those who would like to create an illusion of space, as well as those who would like to block out as much natural light as possible. An inside mount, on the other hand, refers to the style in which curtains are hung on a rod inside the window frame. This style doesn’t completely block out all the natural light, but the technique suits those who like a modern and chic aesthetic.

Determine the length of the rod

Before measuring the window itself, it is a good idea to choose your curtain rod. While most curtain rods are extendable, you need to determine where you will install your rod as this will determine the length that you opt for. It is possible to install your curtain rod from within the window frame, below the trim, or above your window frame. The option that you choose will depend on the style that you are hoping to achieve in your space.

Choose the length of your curtains

When it comes to choosing the length of your curtains, it is important to consider what kind of aesthetic you prefer. The three options are to hang your curtains so that they end above the windowsill, below the windowsill, or just above the floor. Once you have decided where you would like the bottom of your curtains to end, you can choose the length of your curtains.

Measure for width and length

The width of your curtains will depend on how full you would like them to look, but we generally recommend that the curtain width is anywhere between one and a half and three times as wide as your window.

When it comes to length, be sure to measure according to the hanging method that you have chosen and ensure accuracy by putting your measuring tape at the top of the window frame and extending it down to the length that you would like.
